Mother & Child
This sculpture was commissioned to acknowledge the cruel history of illegal, unlawful and forced separation of mothers from their newly born children, undertaken in Australia from the late 1950’s to the mid 1970’s. The sculpture commemorates the findings of the Commonwealth Senate Inquiry Report, Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s National Parliamentary Apology for Forced Adoptions (21 March 2013) and Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and Deputy Premier Peter Ryan’s Parliamentary Apology for Forced Adoption Practices (25 October 2012).
The memorial situated at Victoria Park, Marley Street, Sale, Victoria, Australia, is now a place for acknowledging and reflecting upon the precious and sacred relationship between a mother and child.
